Thursday, August 6, 2009 - Week 4 of Term 3

Another Rant and Rave
Please make an effort to get in all the work that is assigned each week because:

1. First, Unit 2 is being marked mostly on the week to week work.
2. Second, Unit 2 is training for the Unit 3 and 4 classes that might be doing next year - to stay on a schedule, to use different study methods (listen, read, write, mindmaps, etc.).
3. Third, Unit 2 is getting you to take an active part in how you learn at VU.
4. Fourth . . .I cannot think of anything else right now!

Goals for this week
(1) Discuss how to use the internet safely.
(2) Learn more Word skills.
(3) Use repetition techniques for document design.
(4) Try out some Wordpress gadgets and widgets.
(5) Begin business project for those that have completed Word exercises already.

Activity 1 Cybersafety
During class on Thursday, August 6, 2009, we discussed some aspects of cybersafety - how can you tell if a website gives reliable information? We looked at the following points:

1. Does the website work the way that you expect it to?
2. Who are the owners of the website?
3. Who are the authors of the content?
4. How good is the quality of the content?
5. When was the page last updated?
6. Are there legal notices and feedback links?

In class on Monday we will discuss how to communicate safely on the internet. we will discuss the following:

1. What does it mean to communicate safely on the internet?
2. What is inappropriate contact?
3. How do I recognise inappropriate contact?
4. What should I do?
5. Things to remember!
6. Who do I contact for help

Activity 3 More CRAP (contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity
Here is a short summary of the alignment principles tht we looked at last week. Those exercises showed us how to arrange the lines of text on a business card or a document to make it look better! Try these exercises on repetition listed below.
