Start of Unit 2 on Monday, June 15, 2009 but now it is really July 15

Good morning everyone (well it is morning for me!)

Hot off the press!
If your work requirements are completed, then there is no class for you after next week until July 13, 2009. Woo hoo!!

Otherwise, it is class as usual to give you a chance to complete your work requirements before Unit 2 begins. Once Unit 2 begins, it will be pretty hard for you to convince me to accept any further work. So now really is the only time that you will have a chance to complete any leftover work requirements.


Goals for this week in class
(1) Learn more about using gmail

(2) Start a Wordpress blog and use pages feature (which you cannot do in Blogger)

• Site 4
• Site 5
• Site 6
• Site 7

(3) This is another site that we will be using as well for Web 2 technology. We will make a start on Week 1 today.

Good and bad news and worse news
The good news is that Unit 1 is finished. Most of you have completed all the work requirements and have passed everything (S).

The bad news is that some of you still need to complete some of the work requirements. You will be given a result of Not Completed Yet (NYC).

The worse news is that if you have missed more than 80 % of the classes without a Medical Certificate, then the result is an automatic fail (N). for this to be changed, you will need to sit down with Susheel Chand and explain to him the reasons that you have missed so much time out of class.

What is coming up in Semester 2?

1. Communicate electronically (20 hours)
2. Work effectively in a business environment (30 hours)
3. Organise and complete daily work activities (20 hours)
4. Produce simple word processed documents (60 hours)

What we are doing for the next few weeks
We will be looking at how to collaborate online with some old and new technologies such as:

1. Using email
2. virus prevention (not the Swine flu)
3. Create and maintain mailing lists
4. Use Newsgroups
5. Real time communication (synchronous)
6. Off line communication (asynchronous) - blogs, wikis nings, delicious
7. File transfer using FTP
