Introduction
The feedback from the survey last week had a variety of suggestions that were all good and that I shall try to bring into the classroom. These included: (1) goals listed at the start of the class and the material to be covered, (2) more structure, (3) additional extension work for the students that are ahead of the others, (4) I need to explain very clearly what it is that I want you to do and why I want you to do it.
General News and discussion of the survey
Alex has an awesome idea, but I have to wait until class today to find out what it is.
People feel that the Business Administration is not what they expected it to be. This is a hard one since I am not sure what you expected. Certificate II is an entry level course to using basic skills that you need to work in an office - how to talk and listen to others, how to type a minimum of 20 wpm with only one error per minute mistakes, how to answer the phone and take messages and to pass them on, how to work with others as part of a team even though you dislike them or something about them intensely. It is about goal setting, time management. It is about using a computer the same way that a builder uses a hammer and saw. It is about conflict resolution and negotiating skills. It is about knowing your rights and obligations in regards to Occupational Health and safety at your place of work.
Problems and Solutions
The First Problem and solutions
A lot of the students in this class are having difficulty getting used to a computer and using Windows XP and Office 2007. Possible solutions could be:
- Stronger students can help train the newer ones. (Thanks to those of you that are already doing this! This is god training for giving instructions and then getting feedback that they understand it.)
- Newer students can arrange to meet me in the library for help before class.
- Newer students can check out a book from the library to help them. This means taking the time to find one that is not too difficult for you to read and understand if you are learning English.
- Students try some internet websites that have tutorials such as:
- http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/bc/beginnerscomputing.html
- http://www.seniorsguidetocomputers.com/security.asp
A lot of the students in here already know anywhere from a little bit to lots about different aspects of computing. They sit back patiently (or not so patiently) and want something to extend their knowledge.
My suggestion that you have an area that you would like to investigate in depth has worked for two or three. For the others, it is like talking to a pet rock. Except I hear you saying, "Bill, give me something to do!" Well, please try to be a bit proactive here and come up with something that is of interest to you and that you make an effort to do something with it instead of just waiting for me to find something for you to do that you probably won't like anyway. Yadda, yadda, yadda - so there!
Goals for class today
Cuss and Discuss the survey.
Revise previous work in Excel and move on to developing further skills in Excel.
Class Activities
Continue to work on the Excel Skills Sheets and the In the Lab assignments.
If you get stuck, first try to solve it yourself by looking for a tutorial in Google. Next, ask your classmates for help. Finally, ask me!
Save these to your memory stick, or email it to your self at your Gmail account.
Use Winzip to combine all your files into one zipped file and email it to me (0woldham8@gmail.com) by Thursday, April 24, 2009
That's all, folks!
